A good working knowledge of music theory has become a highly desirable skill for today's worship musician. Because most worship leaders and musicians are serving their church on a volunteer basis while working other jobs during the week, few have extra time or money to spend on college courses in music theory. Even those who are able to take such classes would find that some of the information and terms are not applicable in common modern worship scenarios. It's for these reasons that many people will consider Paul Baloche's "Music Theory Made Easy" DVD to be a God-send.
Paul Baloche continues his tireless crusade against musical frustration in the church by bringing the fight to the music theory front. All of the DVDs in the Modern Worship Series are loaded with priceless information, presented with clarity and precision, and "Music Theory Made Easy" is no exception. From the beginning, the DVD demystifies the often intimidating subject of music theory by tackling each topic from multiple perspectives. For instance, Paul will literally illustrate the theory behind scale construction using dry-erase markers and a whiteboard. Next he may show the exact same information on a piano, and then again on the guitar, and maybe even again using his entire band. There is no doubt that repetition is the preferred method of teaching on this DVD, and it works.
There is far too much information on "Music Theory Made Easy" to digest in one sitting. The DVD teaches the how and why behind such topics as major and minor scale construction, chord construction and theory, triads, four and five part chords, slash chords or "chord fractions", how to hear and recognize chord progressions and a whole lot more. The one topic that keeps coming up on this DVD is the Nashville number system. When mastered, the number system is something that will make any musicians life a whole lot easier. This DVD spends a lot of time on this subject and offers exercises to help you sharpen your skills.
As a student in college studying jazz, I couldn't foresee how much easier my journey as a worship leader would be thanks to music theory. All the theoretical fat has been cut out so you won't have to waste your time learning information that you will never use.
